What caused your speaking anxiety?
Most people with speaking anxiety have asked themselves this question. Some have a clear answer. A presentation that went badly. A moment of humiliation in front of the wrong people. Others have nothing to point to. No incident. No memory. No obvious starting point.
It doesn’t matter which camp you’re in. The science behind both is identical.
How a threat response gets created
The nervous system learns through experience. When a situation carries genuine emotional weight — stress, humiliation, a sudden sense of exposure or judgment — the brain encodes that experience in a specific way.
Research across decades of neuroscience has confirmed that fear conditioning can occur following a single significant experience.¹ One event, if emotionally potent enough, is sufficient to create a lasting association between a situation and a threat response. This isn’t a gradual process that requires repeated exposure. The nervous system can update its threat model in a single moment — and once it does, that update persists.
The structures involved are the amygdala and hippocampus. The amygdala encodes the emotional significance of the experience — the threat signal itself. The hippocampus encodes the context: who was there, what the environment looked like, what preceded the moment.² Together, they create a memory that is not just a record of what happened, but a template the nervous system uses to scan future situations for similar threat.
The memory you remember
For some people, the origin is clear. A presentation that went badly in front of senior colleagues. Being called on in a meeting and going blank. An early experience of public humiliation — in school, in a family context, in a situation where status or belonging felt suddenly at stake.
These memories tend to be vivid and persistent. Research on emotional memory has established that experiences with high emotional content are encoded more durably than neutral ones — the amygdala essentially flags them as significant, which deepens the memory trace.³ The nervous system doesn’t just remember what happened. It remembers it as something to watch for.
When a later situation resembles that original experience closely enough, the response fires. Not as a conscious recollection. As an automatic physical reaction.
The memory you don’t remember
This is where it gets particularly relevant for people who have no clear explanation — no memory they can identify, no moment they can point back to. The anxiety is real and persistent, but the origin feels completely out of reach.
The nervous system’s threat learning operates below the level of conscious memory. The amygdala and hippocampus encode emotional experiences independently of the narrative memory system — the part of memory that produces recallable stories about the past. This means it is entirely possible for a threat association to be stored, and to keep generating a response, without any conscious access to the original experience.
In other words: you don’t need to remember it for it to be running your responses. The memory that’s driving your speaking anxiety may be completely invisible to you — not because it doesn’t exist, but because it was never stored in the part of your brain you can consciously reach.
The event may have occurred very early in life, before reliable conscious memory was being formed. It may have been something that didn’t register as significant at the time but carried enough emotional charge to encode. It may simply be that the memory exists at an implicit level — influencing behaviour without surfacing as a recollection.
What matters is not whether the memory is consciously accessible. What matters is that the nervous system encoded a pattern, and that pattern is still running.
What the unconscious mind is actually doing
This is the piece that explains both experiences — remembered and unremembered — in the same framework.
The unconscious mind is continuously scanning the present moment for resemblance to past experiences that carried threat. Its job is pattern recognition and prediction. Every time you enter a speaking situation, it checks: does this resemble something I’ve learned to be careful of?
If the match is close enough, the response fires — before conscious thought has had a chance to weigh in, and regardless of whether you can identify what the original experience was. The unconscious mind isn’t waiting for your permission or your explanation. It’s protecting you based on what it learned, whether or not you remember the lesson.
This is why the absence of a clear memory doesn’t mean the absence of a cause. It means the cause is stored somewhere the conscious mind doesn’t have direct access to.
Why this means about changing speaking anxiety
Understanding where speaking anxiety comes from — whether the origin is remembered or not — clarifies why certain approaches don’t resolve it.
Talking about the origin doesn’t update it. Analysing it doesn’t update it. Reminding yourself that it was a long time ago, that you’re more experienced now, that the situation is different — none of this reaches the level where the pattern is stored.
What updates an unconscious threat association is working directly at the unconscious level — accessing the encoded pattern, creating the conditions under which it can be revised, and installing a different response in its place.
